The "trying human" is a phenomenon that often recurs in Tom's work. People who desperately want something and perhaps can't, but keep trying, creating inventive and moving images. And linked to this trying is existentialism: continuing on despite the awareness of the meaninglessness of existence. Tom enjoys playing with the boundary between adult and child, questioning when something is adult or childish. He believes that within us all lies a child who makes choices in our adult lives. We don't realize that the child within us makes those choices.
