It's Fine, You Can Tell Us
We have here that your name is Benny The Clown. Is that your official name?
We’re not gonna lie. We’re a big fan. Huge. The way you bring joy into this sick world…
You look a bit scared Benny, it’s okay. We’re here to help.
Nothing is clear yet, we’re still searching for evidence.
Oh but wait… we saw that you came in with blood on your hands.
That’s not really a clown thing, right? Bloody hands?
Are you sure you didn’t do it?
It’s fine, you can tell us.
Please sit down.
The central space in the show refers to an interrogation room in which two people try to defend themselves against accusations. Who is the perpetrator and who is the victim remains a question. Who is seen as such through the eyes of the outsider keeps on changing. And then a clown passes by with blood on his hands.
Wars, especially World War II, are remembered through collaboration and resistance. Great acts of heroism and diabolical schemes of criminals are diametrically opposed. But the majority position themselves in accommodation politics: the big grey zone in which people conform to the new power relationship. Within it, accusations quickly get a lot of space.
DeRonde/Deroo is creating this performance especially for Theater Na de Dam. Through their ingenious physicality, striking images and poignant texts, they show how quickly one can become entangled in a system.
Première | May 2025
Duration +/- 60 min

"It is rare to see creators in Dutch theater construct such a consistent and richly visual universe as Deroo and De Ronde do here."
